Review derails. Red Sonja – 19 minutes.

Updated: 14 hours ago

Development of new adaptation of comic book Red Sonja was since 2008 when Robert Rodriguez wanted to realize it with his back then muse Rose McGowan but it didn’t come to fruition and rights went to Millennium Media (Millennium Films in that time) who tried to implement since then. A producer and studio lead Avi Lerner chose Simon West for directing and envisioned Amber Heard for a main character. It was likely that a box-office failure of Conan the Barbarian adaptation with Jason Momoa did slowing with filming of Red Sonja. A project changed scriptwriters through these years. Lerner didn’t care on giving helming to accused in sexual assault Brian Singer in 2018. He protected his choice but was forced to refuse from him because he couldn’t secure a domestic distributor. Eventually, he made political correct choices in a scriptwriter and a director while a lead was given to a black woman. However, differences between sides made leaving of the last two. A director’s seat was given to transgender M.J. Bassett who had deal with the last screenplay, which she rewrote. A production of comic adaptation went into realization in August 2022 where an Italian actress Matilda Lutz became a titular character. Filming ended early of the following year. It was 50th Anniversary of this heroine. A teaser trailer was demonstrated on San Diego ComicCon in July. Public’s reaction was negative. No hesitation to say that delayed with coming to theaters on much longer time. An update came in this March when Samuel Goldwyn became an American distributor and that was with release date in late 2025 whereas coming for silver screens became August 15.

A trailer didn’t seem awful with ecological part on which hanged danger. My eyes were pleased by absence of political correctness in people though one Negro and one Asian were in roles. But, eventually, it was just a trailer.

I already saw in presented video a miscast with actors on lead roles. They can’t make to believe in powerful personalities either physically or psychologically. Matilda Lutz is characterless in performance. She isn’t credible in speaking and acts. That man who became a film’s villain doesn’t convince that he is a leader who can keep in fear. Zero influence does his main henchman who is a female with a white hair (I never understood that color in women’s hairstyles). About a multicolored element in the cast – it presents but keeps limited.

That scriptwriter, whose name Tasha Huo, solidified herself as a face of political correctness. Her portfolio has an infamous presentation of Lara Croft where a titular heroine became a lesbian. She likes to turn everything gay (and it’s not in funny way as can see). Her Red Sonja is an ecological activist. This woman takes care on nature and loves animals. She doesn’t like how an army of one bad guy destroys forests and slays it’s inhabitants with machines. You watch on something from our reality instead an imagined unique world. Huo can’t write by nature. She (or, maybe, Basset) does a simple introduction of a main villain who as sings Michael Jackson “I’m bad” by doing a cruel act while his personality follows a modern tendency which is a poor interpretation of President Donald Trump and this makes to forget that I watch a fantasy again. Such doubtless comparisons were corroborated in interview by a person who had that hero. A script keeps triviality turning to predictability in narrating and presents awkward dialogs intended to make public laugh.

Basset didn’t bother on sense and implemented a written in which acts asking consequences stay out of existence. Fights without elaboration and characters don’t behave savvy there. I always perceived through working materials that director accepted it as a job opportunity and I was right. However, a narration is astonishingly dreadful. That fast-paced approach makes to accept episodes as shortened because they’re unfinished. M.J. Basset isn’t a novice but does these kind mistakes. If look for a polite explanation for her, it can be that this human never made a visit of editor’s room.

A white-haired woman was almost choked but she calls her enemy an amateur. I couldn’t watch and listen. Too much of unexplained nonsense in nineteen minutes. I could forgive a limited budget, which downgraded quality to DVD movie in places, but that’s how ends when you accept political correctness.
